In the history of the world, there have been many people who have searched for the precise alchemy that constitutes an adorable and enduring success — in both personal and public life. Dr. Palani G. Periasamy is one such leader: a man who rose from simple life in a rural Tamil Nadu village to the very pinnacle of industry, education, and international enterprise, and who has continued to lead by extraordinary example well into his eighties.

From Humble Beginnings to Extraordinary Success

Dr. P.G. Periasamy's family was rooted in agriculture in a remote rural corner of Tamil Nadu. He grew up in Muthugapatti, a village near Namakkal in the Kongu belt of western Tamil Nadu — a quintessential Indian village of the early 1940s, with no major social or physical infrastructure and a scarcity of almost every amenity. His family cultivated paddy, tapioca, tobacco, and peanut on large tracts of agricultural land. These early years shaped in him a quiet resilience and a hunger for something larger than the horizon visible from his village.

It is rare to find an ordinary man born in a small village of 4,000 inhabitants who looks beyond unpromising circumstances and pulls himself up by the bootstraps to become a towering success in life. Dr. P.G. Periasamy is precisely that man. Today he heads a Rs 1,000-crore turnover PGP Group of Companies with interests in hotels, sugar, finance, real estate, and education.

Dr. P.G. Periasamy started his education at Sendhamangalam High School, walking close to 14 kilometres each day simply to attend and return. He studied in Tamil medium until his SSLC before joining Alagappa College in Karaikudi for his PUC — where English was the medium of instruction. A University gold medalist in BA Economics from St. Joseph's College, Trichy, he later completed his post-graduation at Presidency College, Chennai, during 1960–62, where he was elected President of the Students' Union and came into contact with leaders of the stature of Kamaraj and Subramaniam, the former Finance Minister of the Indian Government. It was at this point that he recognized, decisively, the leader within himself.

"My sense of discipline was inculcated by Rev. Father Siqueira during my undergraduate days at St. Joseph's College. Every meeting he held would begin and end precisely at the stroke of the clock. That helped mould my sense of discipline."

Following His Passion — and Proving a Point

Dr. Periasamy had joined BA Economics at St. Joseph's with the singular ambition of cracking the civil service examination and becoming an IAS officer. However, by the time he completed his post-graduation, an error in his school certificates had rendered him over-aged for the competitive exam. Rather than accept a lucrative executive position at a leading private company in Chennai for a salary of Rs 640, he heeded the advice of Professor Velayudham, the head of the Economics department at Presidency College, and chose a lecturer's post — for the considerably lesser salary of Rs 245 — at PSG Arts College, Coimbatore. It was a choice that would set the direction of his life.

A further setback followed. The Indian Institute of Economic Growth in Delhi provisionally selected him for a PhD on the strength of his gold medal, but his frank expression of disagreement with Nehru's agricultural policies during the interview — unaware that the interviewer was the very architect of those policies — led to his selection being cancelled. This planted the seeds of a fierce determination to prove himself abroad. Within a month, he left for America to pursue his post-graduation.

Building a Life in America

Dr. Periasamy arrived in the United States with just seven dollars to his name. His gold medal, however, unlocked a reserve of 52,000 dollars along with a foreign exchange licence — issued to him on the strength of his academic achievement alone by Mr. Ganguly, an assistant at the Reserve Bank of India's foreign exchange division, at a time when currency exchange was virtually impossible to obtain. On completion of his post-graduation, Dr. Periasamy could have sold this licence for thrice its value. Instead, he returned it with a letter requesting the Reserve Bank to extend the same benefit to others like him. That letter was eventually placed on display at the Reserve Bank of India, Chennai.

His early days in America were far from comfortable. He studied, earned, and maintained himself — working as an educator during the day and a desk supervisor in the evenings. On advice from faculty member Marina Whitman, he decided to stay back in America after completing his post-graduation. He began teaching at Washington College, joined the University of Baltimore in 1979, and worked there from 1973 to 1987. America recognised his efforts: he was nominated twice as an Outstanding Educator in America, in 1975 and 1976 — a distinction rarely accorded, and rarer still for someone of Indian origin.

"I was able to start all these industries only because of the trust my friends in the US reposed in me, and the investors who came forward to believe in my ventures. On my part, I worked hard to maintain that trust."

Friendship with MGR — A Bond of a Lifetime

Among the most remarkable chapters of Dr. Periasamy's American years is his lifelong friendship with M.G. Ramachandran, the legendary actor and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He first met MGR when the latter visited the United States in 1981. Periasamy was then the President of Tamil Sangams spanning Washington, Maryland, and Virginia. He planned MGR's itinerary and coordinated all his engagements in the absence of MGR's secretary — and that association deepened into a bond that would last a lifetime.

In 1984, Dr. Periasamy arranged for MGR's medical treatment at Brooklyn Hospital in New York, where the Chief Minister underwent a kidney transplant. While MGR was at Brooklyn, the Tamil Nadu assembly elections were held, with MGR contesting from Andipatti. It was Periasamy's idea to shoot a video of MGR at the hospital — to show the people of Tamil Nadu that he was alive and put an end to swirling rumours about his death. The video played a major role in turning the tide in favour of the AIADMK, which returned to power with a thumping majority and MGR became Chief Minister once again.

Post the electoral victory, Periasamy was offered the role of Vice Chancellor or a Minister in the AIADMK cabinet. He declined both. He did not want anyone to assume that his business success had been built on the financial backing of MGR. He had made his money in America, and he had invested it wisely — on his own terms.

Creating the Brand PGP Group

While in America, many affluent Indian doctors sought his guidance on making investments in the country to avail tax benefits. His mastery of economics and American law enabled him to offer proper counsel. On the strength of the goodwill he developed, Periasamy formed PGP Industrial & Financial Consultant Corporation in 1976 and began investing in real estate in the United States, purchasing buildings and shopping malls, renovating and renting them, and later selling for profit.

His first project on home soil was Dharani Cements, a cement factory in Ariyalur, established in 1987 and subsequently sold to the Aditya Birla Group in 1998. He is also the founder of PGP Educational & Welfare Society, which owns several colleges and schools providing quality education to rural communities across Tamil Nadu. He is equally the founder of TamilNadu Foundation — one of the largest Tamil trusts across all 50 states of America — born from what was once a modest effort to help Indians, beginning with a contribution of five dollars a month among friends.

Le Royal Méridien — A Dream Built Against All Odds

After surrendering his US citizenship and returning to India, Dr. Periasamy arrived with a grand plan: to build a landmark luxury hotel in Chennai. Initially launched in 1985 as a joint venture with the Government of India near Chennai's railway stadium, the project was a sweeping vision — 650 rooms, 17 restaurants, the largest convention halls in the city, and a lake. MGR himself laid the foundation stone. Then, overnight, after his friend's passing, the plan was cancelled.

Millions of dollars had already been invested. Seeking legal redress proved futile under the weight of political pressure, which demanded he choose between his cement industry and his hospitality ambitions. Dr. Periasamy chose hospitality — and never looked back. Adamant on realising his dream, he finally opened Le Royal Méridien Chennai in the year 2000, beyond all barriers, beyond all obstacles. The 250-room five-star deluxe hotel is the flagship of Appu Hotels Limited, a part of PGP Group, which also owns Hotel Le Méridien in Coimbatore and Hotel River Side Resorts & Spa at Kumbakonam.

Le Royal Méridien Chennai features 240 rooms across a range of categories — from standard rooms and deluxe suites to the storied Presidential Suite — along with five restaurants and bars, including Navaratna serving royal Indian cuisine, Cilantro for 24-hour international dining, The Dome Bar, and Le Gourmandise. A state-of-the-art fitness centre, Le Mirage Spa offering signature massages and Ayurvedic rituals, and a splendid outdoor pool with whirlpool complete the guest experience.

Le Méridien Coimbatore — World-Class MICE Hospitality

The southern peninsula has in recent decades witnessed a remarkable boom in MICE travel — Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing, and Exhibitions. Even tier-II cities like Coimbatore are now claiming a substantial share of this conference economy, thanks to their entrepreneurial character and industrial strength. Into this landscape stepped Le Méridien Coimbatore, part of the Marriott International brand, which began operations on 11.11.2011 — and holds the distinction of being the 100th property acquired by the Marriott brand globally.

Located on the vibrant Avinashi Road and strategically close to Coimbatore airport, the hotel offers 254 well-appointed rooms and suites, 20 specially designed banquet rooms accommodating crowds from 50 to 2,500 people, and a palatable array of dining options — from the 24-hour Latest Recipe to Peacock for Indian cuisine, Ponzu for Asian flavours, and Favola for poolside Italian. The Peacock Lawn provides an opulent outdoor space for weddings and celebrations. Le Spa's Ayurvedic full-body massages and reflexology treatments ensure that every guest departs refreshed.

"Maintaining a balance between personal life and professional life is essential to scale up in life. Although this balancing act takes careful planning and preparation, it is possible — and it goes a long way."

Management, Family & the Joy of Enhancing Lives

Dr. Periasamy's management philosophy is rooted in a decentralised American model: define the concept, delegate responsibility, and hold each individual accountable for their role. Every company under the PGP brand is compartmentalised, with a corporate office in Chennai maintaining oversight across industries. A strong team of committed executives has been indispensable — Mr. Sennimalai, Joint Managing Director, has been a pillar of strength supporting the Group's Indian entrepreneurial endeavours since 1981.

Behind every milestone stands his wife Visalakshi — a BBA graduate and qualified Systems Analyst who manages PGP's group of educational institutions. They were married in 1964 when he was 25 and she was 17. Today, Dr. Periasamy employs 5,000 people full-time, supports 30,000 to 40,000 farmers, and provides seasonal employment to 12,000 more. Beyond every obstacle he has faced, he says the sheer joy of enhancing people's lives through his work is inexplicable.

Awards & Recognitions

Dr. PGP has been conferred the Mighty Indian Book of Achievers Records & Awards for five consecutive years — 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2025. He received the Indian Food & Health Industry Excellence Awards in 2022 and 2023, and the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023, in recognition of his meritorious contributions to creating and sustaining industries in Tamil Nadu and contributing to global economic growth. Most recently, he was conferred the Best & Pride of Tamil Nadu — Golden Awards of Excellence — in the fields of Hospitality, Industries, Finance, Education, and Agriculture for two consecutive years: 2024 and 2025.

Over the course of a distinguished academic and professional career spanning two continents, he served as a Member of the American Economic Association, the Eastern Economic Association, the Atlantic Economic Society, and the Society of Government Economists. He was also the first non-US President of the Chesapeake Association of Economic Educators, USA — a landmark honour that speaks to the depth of the respect he earned in his adopted country before returning to build his empire at home.
