Anvaya in Chennai Exhibition Weaves Together - India’s Living Craft Lineages, Mythological Narratives and Textile Traditions

In an era where handcrafted traditions are increasingly challenged by mass production and rapidly changing lifestyles, Anvaya emerges as a thoughtful celebration of India’s rich artistic heritage. Presented by the Aabharnam Foundation, a New Delhi-based heritage craft foundation with a remarkable 75-year legacy in India’s textile ecosystem, the exhibition brings together rare heirloom textiles, traditional artworks, and contemporary interpretations inspired by mythology and cultural narratives. Curated by textile collector, cultural curator, and third-generation revivalist Neha Verma, Anvaya is more than a showcase of beautiful objects—it is a tribute to India’s living craft lineages and the artisans who continue to preserve centuries-old traditions.

For Neha Verma, the exhibition is deeply rooted in personal experience and cultural inheritance. Growing up amidst the bustling textile markets and weaving traditions of Old Delhi, she developed an intimate connection with fabrics, craftsmanship, and storytelling through material culture. Textiles, she explains, were never merely a business for her family but an integral part of everyday life. This lifelong exposure inspired her to create an exhibition that would celebrate not only the aesthetic beauty of traditional crafts but also the extraordinary knowledge systems that sustain them. Her approach to curating Anvaya involved extensive research and travel across various craft clusters in India, where she sought out artisans and artworks that represented rare techniques, exceptional skill, and cultural significance.

Rather than selecting pieces solely for their visual appeal, she focused on identifying craft forms that are increasingly endangered and deserve greater recognition and preservation. The decision to launch Anvaya in Chennai was a deliberate one. According to Neha, Chennai possesses a unique cultural sensibility and a deep appreciation for traditional craftsmanship. Unlike many cities where textiles are viewed primarily as fashion or luxury products, Chennai has long nurtured an informed audience that understands the historical, artistic, and technical value of handwoven and handcrafted creations. The city’s strong connection to heritage, classical arts, and traditional knowledge systems made it the ideal setting for an exhibition that seeks to celebrate and preserve India’s living artistic traditions. Neha believed that Chennai’s discerning audience would not only admire the works on display but also appreciate the stories, skills, and cultural contexts behind them.

One of the defining features of Anvaya is its gathering of 18 master artisans from different parts of India, each representing a unique discipline and artistic tradition. These artisans include accomplished weavers, painters, textile artists, and woodcarvers whose expertise has been passed down through generations. Their works collectively offer a panoramic view of Indian craftsmanship, demonstrating the remarkable diversity and sophistication of the country’s artistic heritage. Rather than presenting these creations as isolated exhibits, the curation brings them together in a cohesive narrative that highlights the interconnectedness of India’s craft traditions and the shared cultural values that unite them. Among the exhibition’s highlights are the exquisite hand-painted and woven narratives from Banaras, a city renowned for its rich textile legacy. These pieces showcase extraordinary craftsmanship, intricate detailing, and storytelling traditions that have evolved over centuries.

The exhibition also features the ethereal beauty of Chanderi weaves, celebrated for their lightweight texture, delicate transparency, and timeless elegance. Historically associated with royalty and refined taste, Chanderi textiles represent the pinnacle of weaving artistry and continue to captivate audiences with their understated sophistication. Alongside these textile masterpieces are rare wood carvings that demonstrate the exceptional skill of artisans who transform raw materials into intricate works of art inspired by mythology, architecture, and regional folklore.

Traditional painting forms also occupy an important place within Anvaya. These artistic traditions, refined through centuries of practice and cultural transmission, offer visual narratives rooted in Indian mythology, philosophy, and spiritual beliefs. Mythological themes serve as a unifying thread throughout the exhibition, with artisans drawing inspiration from epics, legends, and sacred stories that have shaped India’s cultural imagination for generations. Through textiles, paintings, and carvings, these narratives are reinterpreted in ways that remain relevant to contemporary audiences while preserving their traditional essence. At its core, Anvaya is also a powerful statement about the importance of preserving endangered craft traditions. Many of India’s artisanal practices face significant challenges due to industrialisation, changing consumer preferences, and declining opportunities for traditional craftspeople. As master artisans age and younger generations pursue alternative careers, valuable knowledge and techniques risk disappearing forever.

Neha Verma views artisans as custodians of India’s cultural identity and believes that every lost craft represents the disappearance of an irreplaceable repository of human knowledge. Through this exhibition, she seeks to create a platform where craftsmanship is appreciated not as a commodity but as a form of high art deserving of recognition, respect, and support.

By celebrating living craft lineages and highlighting the extraordinary skill of India’s master artisans, Anvaya invites audiences to reconsider the role of traditional craftsmanship in the modern world. It demonstrates that these artistic practices are not relics of the past but vibrant and evolving expressions of cultural heritage. The exhibition ultimately serves as a bridge between generations, connecting ancient traditions with contemporary appreciation while ensuring that the stories, techniques, and identities embedded within these crafts continue to thrive. Through its thoughtful curation and exceptional collection, Anvaya stands as a testament to the enduring beauty, resilience, and relevance of India’s living artistic traditions.
