Chitra Visweswaran — Padma Shri recipient and founder of the Chidambaram Academy of Performing Arts

Chitra Visweswaran, born on 12 October 1950 in Tiruchirapalli, was introduced to the world of dance at a very young age by her mother, Rukmini Padmanabhan. Her early exposure to Bharatanatyam, Western Ballet, Manipuri, and Kathak gave her a uniquely rich and diverse foundation in movement and expression. By the age of ten, she performed her arangetram, displaying remarkable talent, discipline, and dedication.

In 1970, Chitra received a National Scholarship for advanced study in Bharatanatyam. She trained under the legendary guru Vazhuvoor Ramaiyya Pillai, under whose guidance she refined her technique, expressive depth, and narrative storytelling, and was selected for lead roles in his dance dramas early in her career.

Building An Institution

In 1975, Chitra founded the Chidambaram Academy of Performing Arts (CAPA) in Chennai, marking a significant contribution to institution-building in Indian classical dance. CAPA emphasises a research-based pedagogy that combines dance theory, stagecraft, and music, and through her teaching and mentorship, Chitra has nurtured generations of dancers, helping create a global footprint of Bharatanatyam excellence.

As a choreographer, she is known for blending tradition with innovation. Her productions, including Devi Ashta Rasa Malika, Panchali, and Nritya Srinkhala, introduced new dimensions to Bharatanatyam through group formations, mime, and thematic storytelling — expanding the classical form beyond the solo format while still honouring its core grammar and discipline.

Recognition

Chitra has performed extensively across India and internationally, with tours spanning Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia, and her work has been broadcast on the BBC and other global networks. She received the Padma Shri from the Government of India in 1992, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987, and the Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1982, along with several other accolades including Nritya Choodamani and Natanamani.

Devi Awards 2025: Honouring Women Who Inspire

The Devi Awards 2025, hosted by The New Indian Express, celebrated the achievements of exceptional women across Tamil Nadu and South India, recognising excellence in arts, education, sports, entrepreneurship, social service, and culture. Held at the ITC Grand Chola in Chennai, the ceremony began with a traditional lamp-lighting led by Preetha Reddy, Vice-Chairperson of Apollo Hospitals.

Among the thirteen women felicitated, Chitra Visweswaran was honoured for her lifelong role in preserving and promoting classical dance, alongside honourees including Carnatic vocalist Sudha Ragunathan, para-athlete and Arjuna Awardee Jerlin Anika, and poet Arundhathi Subramaniam — each reflecting the idea that success is multidimensional and deeply impactful.
