“In this ever-changing society, the most powerful and enduring brands are built from the heart. They are real and sustainable. Their foundations are stronger because they are built with the strength of the human spirit, not an ad campaign. The companies that are lasting are those that are authentic.”
— Howard Schultz, CEO, Starbucks

From a modest farming family in Erode to building one of India's most admired dairy brands, Sathish Kumar, Promoter and Chairman & Managing Director of Milky Mist Dairy Foods Limited, has redefined value-added dairy manufacturing in the country. His entrepreneurial journey is a remarkable story of resilience, innovation, and visionary leadership that transformed a struggling family milk business into a modern dairy enterprise serving millions of consumers across India.

From Milk Trading to Paneer Pioneer

In 1992, Sathish Kumar joined his father's traditional milk trading business at a time when it was facing continuous losses due to milk spoilage, fluctuating prices, and dependence on traders. Instead of giving up, he looked for opportunities to create value from milk rather than merely trading it. During frequent visits to Bengaluru, he noticed restaurants using paneer extensively in their dishes. Curious to learn the process, he persuaded local chefs to teach him the art of making paneer. That single decision became the foundation of what would later become one of India's most successful dairy brands.

Starting with a small manufacturing unit at Chithode and limited technical knowledge, Sathish Kumar initially supplied paneer exclusively to hotels. Recognising the importance of branding, he registered the name “Milky Mist” in 1996 and gradually expanded into the retail market with hygienically packed paneer. As consumer confidence grew, the company diversified into curd, yoghurt, butter, ghee, cheese, cream, desserts, UHT products, and several other value-added dairy products. The company's growth accelerated between 2010 and 2016 with the introduction of multiple cheese varieties and innovative dairy products.

Today, Milky Mist offers more than 25 product categories with nearly 200 SKUs, making it one of India's leading value-added dairy companies. With a vision to become a pan-India brand competing with industry giants while empowering dairy farmers, Sathish Kumar continues to drive Milky Mist towards becoming a billion-dollar enterprise.

Legacy Over 40 Years

Inside The Mega Plant

Headquartered at Perundurai near Erode, Milky Mist Dairy Foods Limited operates a world-class 55-acre integrated Mega Plant, commissioned in 2019–20, with a processing capacity of one million litres of milk per day, expandable to 1.5 million litres. The facility incorporates advanced technology for producing curd, yoghurt, butter, ghee, mozzarella, cheddar cheese, cream cheese, shrikhand, lassi, milk powders and whey powder under one integrated manufacturing ecosystem. Every stage — from milk procurement to packaging — is designed around automation, quality assurance and food safety.

Technology has been central to the company's success — from robotic paneer lines to India's largest fully automated mozzarella cheese plant.

Milky Mist currently procures around 5.5 lakh litres of milk every day directly from nearly 56,000 farmers spread across eight districts of Tamil Nadu. By eliminating intermediaries and establishing an extensive village-level procurement network, the company has significantly improved farmers' income while ensuring a steady supply of high-quality milk. Rather than competing in conventional liquid milk markets, Milky Mist has invested heavily in specialised processing technologies that create higher-value products while maximising returns for dairy farmers.

Today, Milky Mist manufactures a comprehensive portfolio that includes paneer, curd, yoghurt, butter, ghee, mozzarella, cheddar, processed and Gouda cheese, cream, UHT milk, dairy beverages, desserts, shrikhand, payasam, milk powders, frozen foods, chocolates, ice creams and ready-to-cook products. The products are distributed through a nationwide network of over 1,600 distributors, supported by one of India's largest fleets of refrigerated delivery vehicles. The company operates India's largest fully automated mozzarella cheese plant, robotic paneer manufacturing and packaging lines, high-speed cheese slicing systems capable of processing 1,000 slices per minute, and advanced spray drying facilities for dairy powders.

Committed To Sustainability & Farmer Welfare

Milky Mist has established itself as a pioneer in sustainability by becoming one of India's first FMCG companies to operate entirely on renewable energy. A major milestone in this journey was the commissioning of a 7 MW solar power plant at Kavilipalayam, Erode, in March 2022. Developed by SWELECT with an investment of approximately ₹40 crore, the facility enables the company to operate using 100% renewable energy while reducing nearly 30,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. Combined with its existing 6 MW solar power plant at Chithode and 2 MW wind farm at Kayatharu in Tirunelveli, Milky Mist now possesses a renewable energy capacity of 15 MW, making it a power-surplus dairy company driven entirely by sustainable energy sources.

The company's commitment extends beyond energy conservation. Through its direct procurement network, thousands of farmers receive fair prices for their milk without the involvement of intermediaries. Milky Mist also provides technical guidance, veterinary assistance, healthcare support, and continuous training to improve livestock management and milk quality, and regularly invites farmers to visit its manufacturing facilities to witness how their milk is transformed into premium dairy products — an act of transparency that strengthens trust and fosters a strong sense of partnership between the company and its farming community.
